- Online – SomaFM Deep Space One is an internet-only radio station and is not broadcast on FM, AM/MW, LW, DAB Digital Radio, DAB+ or HD Radio.
SomaFM Deep Space One focuses on deep ambient electronic music, experimental sound design and space-themed atmospheres. The station sits between SomaFM’s more rhythmic space channels and its pure drone programming, giving it a distinctive middle ground: slow-moving, exploratory and cinematic, but not completely static.
The sound is ideal for late-night listening, coding, reading, working, sleeping or disappearing into your own thoughts for a while. Expect long-form ambient pieces, drifting synth tones, subtle electronic pulses, minimal rhythms and expansive textures that feel built for inner and outer space exploration. It is not easy listening in the cheesy sense; it is spacious, patient and properly atmospheric.
Based in San Francisco, SomaFM has built a reputation for hand-curated internet radio channels with strong musical identities. Deep Space One is a clean example of that approach because it does not chase playlists, trends or obvious hooks. It commits fully to deep ambient and experimental space music, which makes it useful for listeners who want a focused, immersive station rather than a mixed chill playlist with no spine.
Notable Presenters & Shows: Deep Space One is music-directed by Rusty Hodge, the founder of SomaFM. Hodge also programs several SomaFM channels, including Mission Control, Groove Salad, Secret Agent, Drone Zone, Space Station Soma and Digitalis. Deep Space One is not built around conventional breakfast or drive-time presenter shows; its identity comes from Hodge’s continuous curation of deep ambient electronic, experimental and space music.
