Americana roots music for cowhands, cowpokes and cowtippers
SomaFM Boot Liquor is a San Francisco-based country and roots station with a rougher, sharper edge than polished mainstream country radio. It focuses on Americana roots, country western, alt-country and independent artists, with songs that lean into heartbreak, hard living, dry humour and proper storytelling.

- Online – SomaFM Boot Liquor is an internet-only radio station and is not broadcast on FM, AM/MW, LW, DAB Digital Radio, DAB+ or HD Radio.
SomaFM Boot Liquor is built around Americana roots music, country western sounds and off-the-beaten-path country records. The station has a gritty personality: twangy guitars, bar-room stories, desert-road moods, rough-edged vocals and songs that sound lived-in rather than manufactured. It is country music with character, not glossy chart-country filler.
The playlist is especially useful for listeners who like the rootsier end of country: alt-country, independent Americana, cowboy-leaning songs, folk-country crossovers and artists who sit outside the most obvious Nashville lane. SomaFM’s own description makes the tone clear, with music about life, death, misery, broken hearts and broken bones. That gives Boot Liquor a darker, funnier and more interesting identity than a standard country hits stream.
Based in San Francisco, SomaFM has built its reputation on hand-curated internet radio with strong musical lanes. Boot Liquor fits that model perfectly because it is not trying to be everything to every country listener. It is focused, human-curated and full of roots music that rewards proper listening, especially for anyone bored of predictable country playlists.
Notable Presenters & Shows: Boot Liquor is music-directed by Roy Batchelor. SomaFM says Batchelor came to the format after growing tired of classic rock radio’s repetition and discovering The Beat Farmers, which led him deeper into country, roots and Americana influences. Boot Liquor is not built around conventional breakfast or drive-time presenter shows; its identity comes from Batchelor’s continuous curation of Americana roots, country western and independent country tracks.
