Kool FM is one of the most influential names in British jungle and drum-and-bass radio. The station began broadcasting from East London in 1991, originally using 94.5 and later 94.6 FM as an unlicensed pirate service. Its DJs, MCs and live broadcasts gave early jungle, hardcore and drum and bass a dedicated home while those sounds were still developing in clubs, record shops and raves across London.
After operating online as Kool London, the station was acquired by Rinse FM in 2023 and relaunched under the Kool FM name with a substantially expanded schedule. The modern service preserves its old-skool roots while covering the full drum-and-bass spectrum, including jungle, liquid, rollers, jump-up, techstep, dancefloor, intelligent drum and bass, record-label showcases, international guest mixes and recordings from the Kool archive.
Kool FM broadcasts on DAB+ across North London and is available live online through Radio Player UK. Its schedule combines established figures such as Fabio and Grooverider, DJ Brockie, Uncle Dugs and DJ Ron with newer selectors, producers, labels and collectives, giving listeners both the history of the scene and the music shaping its future.
Notable shows & presenters are:
- Fabio & Grooverider: The long-standing drum-and-bass pioneers present upfront music from across the genre, drawing on more than three decades at the centre of jungle and drum-and-bass culture.
