Wythenshawe FM is one of South Manchester’s strongest community radio stories. Broadcasting from Wythenshawe Forum, the station is run by volunteers who live and work in the area, with a mission to give local people a voice and promote the services, groups and issues that matter across Wythenshawe, Northenden and the wider M22 and M23 communities. It is local radio in the proper sense: made close to the community, by people who know the area.

The station began from a Radio Regen training project around 1999/2000, when local participants helped create a short-term community station. That early idea grew into Wythenshawe FM, which first went on air in May 2000 and later became a long-running community broadcaster. Today WFM broadcasts on 97.2 FM, DAB across South Manchester, online and smart speakers, with live and pre-recorded shows running around the clock.

Wythenshawe FM’s output reflects the variety of South Manchester itself. The station carries talk shows, specialist music, foreign-language programmes, community features, training opportunities and shows aimed at specific groups. Its value is not just entertainment. WFM gives volunteers practical media skills, helps local voices get heard, and creates a positive platform for people whose stories are often ignored by bigger broadcasters.
