Radio Folkestone is the community radio station for Folkestone and the surrounding Kent coast, broadcasting locally on 105.9 FM. The station began broadcasting on 31 March 2011 as 105.9 Academy FM Folkestone and developed a strong local identity through community news, interviews, music and work with young broadcasters. In May 2024 the station adopted the Radio Folkestone name, reflecting its wider role as a radio service built specifically around the town and its people.
The station now broadcasts from The Glassworks in central Folkestone and is operated by Radio Folkestone CIC. Responsibility for the community FM licence transferred to the CIC in July 2025, moving the station into a new chapter led by its volunteer broadcasting team. Local life remains central to the schedule, with programmes covering Folkestone events, community organisations, sport, traffic and travel alongside interviews with people making a difference across the area.
Radio Folkestone also has a notably broad music schedule. Daytime programming combines familiar hits with local information, while evenings make room for specialist music including blues, jazz, alternative music, rock, soul, funk and decade-based shows. Local musicians and Kent-based music are given space alongside mainstream tracks, while programmes such as The Folkestone Status and the station’s sports output give listeners material they are unlikely to hear from national radio services.
Notable shows & presenters are:
- Ross Hoare: Presenter of Weekday Breakfast, combining music with Folkestone news, local events and the daily Brain Buster. Ross also appears on Saturday Breakfast alongside Tia and Taya.
- Kay McLoughlin: Host of The Folkestone Status, a community-focused programme featuring local events, interviews and stories from around Folkestone. She is also closely involved with Radio Folkestone’s community and outside-broadcast work.
- Tim James: Presenter of Drivetime, bringing together music with local news, traffic, travel and information for listeners heading through the afternoon and early evening.
- Taya Walters: Presenter of The Rock Show, covering both new and classic rock across different styles. Taya is also part of the Saturday Breakfast team.
- Kevin Daly: Radio Folkestone’s sports presenter, heard on Thursday Sports and alongside Adrian Dawkes on Saturday Sports. His coverage places particular emphasis on local clubs, sporting organisations and people involved in sport around Folkestone.
- Clayton Thomson: Host of The Alternative Show and The Live Room, focusing on alternative music and introducing listeners to newer and less mainstream artists.
- Wayne J C: Presenter of The Tracklist on Saturday evenings, using his DJ background for a music-led start to Saturday night. Wayne has also played a major role behind the scenes at the station.
- Jack Bithell: Presenter of Through The Decades on Sundays, moving through classic tracks from different eras in a two-hour weekend programme.
